Voices Remembering Slavery

Freed People Tell Their Stories

Recorded interviews with people who lived through slavery in the United States, from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. This edition presents eleven of them, recorded between 1935 and 1975, with the words appearing as they are spoken.

The transcripts are the Library's own and keep the language of the recordings, including period terms and slurs. Timing is matched automatically; where a recording is hard to hear, it is marked sync approximate. For the words and phrases the speakers use, and their history, see the notes on language.
